Directed by Sébastien Lifshitz (2004) France, 35mm, in French with
English subtitles, 93 minutes
Director Sébastien Lifshitz follows up his sexy feature Come Undone
with a sumptuous film that went on to win the 2004 Teddy Award for
best gay film at the Berlin Film Festival. The film follows a trio of
disparate outsiders; Stephanie, a pre-op transgendered Parisian prostitute;
Mikhai, a Russian Army deserter; and Jamel, a French Arab hustler.
A trip to the country to take care of Stephanie’s dying mother draws
them closer and cements their ménage à trois. The distance from their
everyday lives allows them to become more vulnerable and to take risks
both sexual and emotional.

Directed by Michael Burke (2002) U.S., 35mm, 90 minutes
Having expanded his award-winning shocking gay short Fishbelly White at the Sundance Lab, director Michael Burke’s feature-length The Mudge Boy loses none of its transgressive power in translation. There is something odd about shy Duncan Mudge. The source of ridicule for most of the teenagers in his rural town, he finds solace in his pet chicken and Perry, a hunky boy from a neighboring farm. After the death of his mother, Duncan’s desperation for love and attention leads to a lapses in judgment that become increasingly disturbing. "Odd and intense, very well acted, and impossible to dismiss."--Roger Ebert |
