7:30 pm Sugar

Directed by John Palmer (2004) Canada, 35mm, 78 minutes.

Based on J. D., the risqué short stories of enfant terrible Canadian director Bruce LaBruce (Super 8 1/2, No Skin Off My Ass, Skin Flick, The Raspberry Reich), Sugar is a provocative coming-of-age story. Encouraged by his little sister (Haylee Wanstall, The Safety of Objects, Queer as Folk) to get laid on his birthday, Cliff hooks up with Butch (Brendan Fehr, Roswell, Final Destination), a handsome hustler with an increasingly troubling drug habit. After a night together, they hit the streets of Toronto where Butch tutors Cliff on the streetwise ways of hookers and drug dealers. They even receive a bit of sage advice from a pregnant drug dealer played by Sarah Polley. Cliff’s spiraling drug addiction then begins to test their relationship. Co-writer, Todd Klinck, a working escort when he wrote the script, brings a sense of gritty realism to LaBruce’s stories.
