Taking top youth jury prizes around the world, Bluebird is a deceptively simple film. 13 year-old Merel appears to be a model child; she is a good student, a competitive diver, she sings and does theatre, and she has a close, caring relationship with her parents and her younger brother, Kasper, who is physically disabled. On the cusp of adolescence, Merel finds herself unprepared for a case of inexplicable bullying by her peers. Her sense of isolation grows as she hides the truth from her parents and teachers and Kasper goes to live in a special home for physical rehabilitation. Yet Merel overcomes these real world hurdles with strength and subtle grace. – DG
