The director of the international hit Insomnia takes a crack at his homeland’s most cherished playwright with An Enemy of the People. This lushly photographed update of Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play transplants the action to modern day Norway, where celebrity consumer advocate Tomas (sort of a Scandinavian Michael Moore) returns to his hometown on the verdant western coast to start up a business with his brother Peter. Their plan to bottle the purest water in Europe goes awry when their supply is tainted with a toxic pesticide. When Peter learns of a possible link between his brother and the contamination, a rift forms that threatens to tear apart both the business and the family. |
