Al Franken: God Spoke (one assumes that Franken gets top billing over God only because “F” comes before “G” in the alphabet) follows the former Saturday Night Live writer and performer from his highly publicized feud with cable TV talk show host Bill O’Reilly sparked by Franken’s best selling book, “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them,” through his lengthy efforts against the re-election of President George W. Bush in 2004.
The journey includes Franken’s USO tour in Iraq, the studios of the liberal radio network “Air America” of which Franken is the marquee host/commentator, and campaign stops in the 2004 presidential election. The film features cameo appearances by bloviators of all political stripes, including Ann Coulter, Michael Moore, Sean Hannity, William Safire, John Kerry, Al Gore, John Kerry, Robert Kennedy Jr., and Henry Kissinger. The film is by no means a valentine to Mr. Franken, who may yet decide to run for U.S. Senator in his native state of Minnesota, but rather a “warts and all” portrait of a man who decided he “couldn’t take it anymore,” and set out to do something about it.
In Variety, Joe Leydon summed it up this way: “Smoothly paced, well-crafted pic should greatly please auds attuned to Franken’s prickly wit and iconoclastic commentary and might even engage some right-leaning non-fans who grudgingly respect his smartly satirical sass.”
