Recommended for All Ages
A spectacular new archival print of 1940s full-length technicolor musical cartoon, Hoppity Goes to Town from Fleischer Studios (creators of Koko the Clown, Popeye, Betty Boop, early Superman, and Gullivers’ Travels). Hoppity is a charmer of a grasshopper who leads the blue-collar bugs of Bugville against the villainous C. Bagley Beetle. With the help of his sweetheart, Honey Bee, a struggling songwriting human and his clever wife, Hoppity must save the inhabitants’ NYC weed patch from swindle and the threat of catastrophic (for bugs) skyscrapers. The swinging jazz music of Hoagy Carmichael accompanies this nostalgic, classically animated feature that will tickle audiences of all ages. DG
Dave and Max Fleischer opened Fleischer studios five years before Disney in 1915. The brothers created the first sound cartoon and developed the animation technique of “rotoscoping” live images. Hoppity Goes to Town is one of their last works as a team.
