Non-professional actor Ahmad Razvi gives a riveting performance as Ahmad, a Pakistani street vendor who ekes out a living selling coffee and pastries to Midtown Manhattan commuters. With his beloved wife recently deceased and his young son in the custody of spiteful in-laws, his only friend is a stray kitten he rescues from the streets. When a pair of chance encounters one with a wealthy banker, the other with a comely news seller give Ahmad a shot at financial stability and rekindled romance, his fortunes appear to be on the upswing. But Ahmad has worked the mean streets long enough to know that there’s no such thing as a sure thing.
“Bahrani’s subtly resonant character portrait… applies a rapt focus to its protagonist’s daily routine. By the end of the film, the repeated images of man pushing cart have not only become totemic but merged into an infinite loop, a visually eloquent summation of the stoic hero’s existential plight.” - Village Voice North Carolina-born Ramin Bahrani, 31, studied at Columbia University before moving to his ancestral homeland of Iran to film his debut feature Strangers (2000). Screen International magazine listed him among their “U.S. Stars of Tomorrow” in January 2006. He currently resides in New York City.
