Guy Maddin directs, but Isabella Rossellini does just about everything else in this 16-minute short film made as a gift for the 100th anniversary of the great Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini’s birth. Aside from an enormous stomach to represent her dad, Isabella plays herself, her mother, and a slew of legendary filmmakers – Hitchcock, Chaplin, Fellini, David O. Selznick – as they all debate the career of the director of groundbreaking neo-realism while Isabella (as herself) laments his less-than-spectacular popularity in modern cinema.

Guy Maddin is a writer and director of both features and short films. His most distinctive quality is his fondness for recreating the look and style of silent or early sound era films. Maddin studied Economics at the University of Winnipeg and worked as a bank teller and house painter before settling upon a career as a filmmaker. Maddin’s first film was the 1986 short The Dead Father. His first feature film was Tales From the Gimli Hospital. Maddin continues to live and work in Winnipeg.
