The American military officially withdrew from Vietnam more than thirty years ago, but the Independent Spirit Award-nominated Sir! No Sir! demonstrates that the facts of the war remain disturbingly relevant today. The Vietnam War produced an unprecedented level of open dissent from men and women in uniform, with the Pentagon estimating a staggering 503,926 “incidents of desertion” over a five year period. Untold numbers of officers were killed or wounded by their own troops and there were more than a few incidents of units simply refusing to fight. Through interviews and archival footage, Sir! No Sir! tells the largely unheard stories of the soldiers who stood up against a war they considered unjust and unwinnable. Far from the stereotypical image of authority-bashing longhairs, these protesters run the gamut from nurses to Green Berets to decorated Marines (plus the ocassional Oscar-winning actress), many of whom were court martialed or jailed for their actions. With the U.S. embroiled in another unpopular and overlong war, this film is as timely as it is illuminating.

David Zeiger first received national notice for his critcally acclaimed PBS documentaries, including The Band, Displaced in the New South and Senior Year. A leader of the anti-war movement in Vietnam-era Texas, he has been compiling material for Sir! No Sir! for more than a decade.
