The Chaser (S. Korea)
Director: Na Hong-Jin
Former police detective Jun-Ho, sacked years ago for corruption, runs a small and failing escort service. When he encourages a flu-ridden prostitute to replace her missing fellow employee, and she, herself, disappears just like her predecessors, the ex-cop is forced to take up pursuit. A race against the clock begins as he searches for a disturbed serial killer. Whimsical suspense marks this début by Na Hong-Jin in the super-hard thriller film genre. But the ambiance is absolutely Korean, with the stubborn yet engaging characters, plenty of physical violence and a sweltering slum in Seoul in summer.? A runaway hit in South Korea and well-received at Cannes.
